they probably cant love me back in a human or even mammalian sense, but my goldfish with their smooth pea-sized brain have learned to trust that i will make them better when they are sick. i feel like crying about this often

i think it's eminently stupid when people say that pets "can't love you". love is already such an ambiguous word that encompasses so many different things.

find two humans and they will inevitably love in different ways. one person is not going to be capable of loving me in exactly the same way another person can.

when you look at pets though, you see lots of signs of things that fall under the broad umbrella of we call love. some animals feel comfortable and safe around us, even when they do not feel similarly comfortable and safe around most people. some of them miss us and feel anxious when we're not there, and excited and happy when we are reunited. some of them will protect us from harm even placing themselves at risk to do so, some of them will notice when we are sad and comfort us. some of them bring us gifts even.

what is going on in people's heads, that they feel so attached to the idea of animals not being able to feel or experience the same things we do, that they ignore these things and go out of their way to say things that come across as rude and insensitive?

i don't know what is going on in these people's heads, but i do know that it is sad, and it is eminently stupid.
